Person in custody
A person a prison, remand centre, detention centre or jail is holding, either waiting for trial (on remand) or serving a sentence. They are the person a visitor comes to see. The platform knows them only by a reference; their custody details stay with the facility.
Housing unit
The part of a facility where people in custody live, such as a block or a wing. A lockdown is placed on a housing unit, and it stops the visits of everyone who lives there until it is lifted.
Visiting area
The part of a facility visitors are let into, such as a visiting hall. It has a capacity, holds the visiting rooms, and is the zone a visitor's pass opens.
Visiting room
A room, screened booth or video station inside a visiting area where visits take place. Each one offers one kind of visit, holds a set number of people, and has its own weekly opening hours.
Custody visit
One booked meeting between a person in custody and their approved visitors, at a set time, in a visiting room, of one kind (contact, non-contact, video or professional). It is booked within the facility's rules and admitted at the desk. Not the same as a Visit, which counts a guest on a waitlist.
